Passionate and abundantly versed on matters regarding the weather, Jeanette has always had the desire to become a weather presenter and forecaster from a young age. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Jeanette considers her upbringing in the vast state a blessing as she got to witness several weather events such as floodings, tornadoes, and microbursts among others which she marvels at to this date.
Jeanette has revealed that she would spend a lot of time watching severe weather coverages on TV and would often get so invested that she would translate what the presenters were saying into Spanish for her parents, who are Latin speakers. She attributes this hobby as the stepping stone for her developing her eloquent Spanish speaking skills which she now uses to present the news for Telemundo Delmarva.
Educational Background and Bilingualism
For her studies, Jeanette attended Texas A&M University in College Station. An astute scholar, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and topped it off with a minor in Spanish. Jeanette saw from an early age that being bilingual could help her have an extra advantage in the journalism scene and to her reward, it paid off quite well.
During her time at Texas A&M University, she assisted in piloting the institution’s first-ever TV weather broadcasting program all in her junior year. Her ventures do not stop there as she was also very active on radio, broadcasting weekly forecasts for KAMU FM and KTRL FM in addition to serving as a broadcast coordinator for a group of over 20 students.
Moreover, Jeanette presented research on “Bilingualism in the United States Melting Pot” at the American Meteorological Society’s annual meeting in January 2020. Her investigation focused on the parallels and differences between the English- and Spanish-language weather broadcasting sectors.
Internship and First Job.
For her first job, Jeanette interned for KBTX News in Bryan, Texas where she found her new love in broadcasting. Thereafter, she appeared on Univision Dallas’ radar where she would hone her Spanish skills by learning different types of Spanish weather communication (a skill which she has now perfected).
